J0vanna’s great debut single “Brain on Fire”

Surely having feelings isn’t a sign of weakness…? Having feelings means we’re human right? This is the sound of celebrating that choice, J0vanna’s choice to not deny her humanity, a declaration: a “two fingers” to the shame & stigma that attempts to keep us silent. This is the raw sound of courage and it sounds so good…

Co-produced and mixed by Terrence Rolle, collaborator of Pharrell’s “Happy” and mastered by Grammy-nominated mastering engineer, Dave Kutch, the song takes you through the artist’s journey of numbness and pain while dealing with OCD and anxiety disorder:

“I wrote Brain on Fire during a very difficult time in my life in which I was dealing with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety. I battled with irrational thoughts that were repeatedly going through my mind. It was hard for me to think or even function. I felt like my mind was literally on fire. After struggling for a while, I got help, but it took me a while. I kept it to myself for a very long time. I would constantly worry about what would others think of me.

I’ve come to a point in my life to not worry anymore. Talking about it has been a huge part of my healing process. I decided to write the song in order to talk about my experience. In the song, I take the listener through my journey. It is my raw truth. I hope people can emotionally connect to my music because it is coming from a place deep down inside…”

J0vanna Brain on Fire

This is the bravest tune I’ve heard in some time: realising that speaking up is not a weakness, to perhaps retire tired and old narratives of “the strong woman” or “the “super masculine man” it is ok to talk about it, to ask for help – that takes courage…
