KRISTOPHER “Borrowed Time”

In a month associated with the celebration of love, singer-songwriter KRISTOPHER greets us with the best trope inversion we could’ve asked for. His newest single “Borrowed Time” is a song about love — just not the kind we desire.

Kristopher Houck is an Orlando, Florida based artist with over a decade of experience in musical theatre and orchestra under his belt. His music is greatly influenced by his painful beginnings and injustice he’s both suffered and witnessed, and he strives to empower and heal people with his passionate voice and music. The sincerity behind his lyrics and vocals attract an audience of listeners whom understand the feelings he sings about.

Borrowed Time, much like his debut single Liar, is a song brimming with authenticity. His origins in musical theatre can be felt within the dramatic, cinematic tone of the entire song, which helps heighten the feelings evoked by it.

The track is about fabricated love, and Kristopher cleverly portrays this theme by starting with a fairytale-esque piano that peaks dramatically during the chorus. The musical theme is always present and deeply interwoven with the lyrics; it creates and fully immersive listening experience.

Despite Borrowed Time being a song about a love not meant to last, it is not a negative song. Rather, it allows the audience to momentarily remember any pain they’ve gone through before letting them realize they are better off without that unhealthy relationship, even if it had meant a lot to them. The rawness of the story within this track helps the listeners and the artist beginning their healing and hopefully, find genuine love in the future.

“I want people to open up to their emotions. Borrowed Time is about settling for less love than you deserve because it’s better than no love at all.”

After listening to his second release of 2021, I can say with full confidence that Kristopher is an inspirational youth that does not shy away from painful topics or memories. As a gay youth, Kristopher is now becoming someone to look up to and find comfort in inside the LGBT community, while still being relatable to other audiences.
