Welcome back! Today we will delight ourselves with this brand new math rock single written in a 7/4 time signature. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, all modern pop music is written in a 4/4 time signature, which means you count 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4… In a 7/4 time signature, however, you count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7… Think of Money by Pink Floyd.
Anyway lets not get too technical about it and let me tell you a bit about this recently formed band with its really awesome name: I Am The Unicorn Head is the result of a Reddit post! The magic of online community!
English musician ‘Kid A’ decided to fight isolation by keeping himself occupied with creativity and music. Making an online post seeking people that would help him in his endeavour, an American musician from Baltimore delighting in the name ‘Dragon Lord Apocalypse’ replied, and this meeting of minds soon led to the formation of the band.
“Concerned with any potential mental health issues brought on by loneliness and isolation, we wanted to completely throw ourselves into a flurry of creativity to keep ourselves sane.” – IATUH
“Eating Cornbread In Quarantine” is their debut single and the very first song the band wrote together. Lyrics express the same mental health issues the bandmates were trying to avoid during this period of isolation. In no time, this duo attracted the attention of one of UK’s most popular music magazines, PROG Magazine.
“They told us all their editors liked our track, and think their readers will as well. They are featuring us in their Sept issue (123) both inside the magazine, and also on their coveted cover CD.” – IATUH
This means the band will gain access to a huge media exposure throughout the country. Problem is, they are still working through gaining local and social media followers. “The main problem we have, is that we have no local fanbase, we can’t play live (or even meet in person), so although we have this great publicity coming up in the magazine, most people don’t know we even exist.“
Still, this is no hold back for the international duo as they are resolved to release a new single every 6 weeks, and after the 6th single is released, they will package the 6 tracks along with some additional new ones to present their first full length debut album. Cheers to that!
I am the Unicorn Heads’ music has been said to be eclectic, covering numerous mutually appreciated genres including alternative, indie, prog, math rock, psychedelic, and garage rock. Although hard to define, listeners have likened the band to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Modest Mouse, and Sparklehorse, among others.
