Jimmy Eff “You’re Not Alone”

We’re glad to announce that West Midlands, United Kingdom-based indie-folk artist Jimmy Eff has released a new single, entitled “You’re Not Alone.”

Primarily a guitarist and vocalist, Jimmy Eff writes and sings upbeat songs with a melancholy edge. Jimmy has performed at many venues across the West Midlands, including The Flapper and the Actress & Bishop in Birmingham, as well having played festival slots at Derbyshire’s Y Not Festival and Bearded Theory along with multiple appearances at Coventry’s Godiva Festival. Describing his musical influences, Jimmy Eff says, “My love affair with music began back in the 90s, with Britpop bands such as Oasis, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene and Shed Seven. It has evolved so much since then, taking in bands such as Wheatus, Green Day & Peace and artists such as Frank Turner and Beans on Toast. I’m proud to bear these artists as inspirations, and I think they all come across in my songwriting.

Along with Jonny K, Jimmy Eff recorded and released a debut EP in 2013, entitled The Road EP, as well as a single entitled “Tea With The Queen” in 2016. Jimmy and Jonny have been recording and mixing their latest EP, entitled The Better Start EP, which will be released in Autumn 2021 and which contains the lead single “You’re Not Alone.”  The track was written after a close friend of Jimmy’s took an overdose in an attempt to take his own life, after suffering with severe anxiety. As the song title indicates, he’s not alone; suicide rates among men are very high, all because of the silly notion of “man up.” “You’re Not Alone” is a song for anyone struggling; there’s no need to bottle up how you are feeling; there is always someone out there to talk to, and it’s OK not to be OK.

Describing the inspiration behind “You’re Not Alone,” Jimmy says, “‘You’re Not Alone’ was written in 2019 after a close friend took an overdose whilst going through a very rough patch in his life. Thankfully he called his wife, who managed to get an ambulance out to him and into hospital. He’d not said anything to anyone about how he was feeling or what he was going through to bring him to this point and this choice. With all that has gone on over the past two years, it is more important than ever that we take our mental health seriously. ‘You’re Not Alone’ was the first time I’ve ever written a song lyrics first and then added the riff/chords afterwards. This song is a reminder to my friend that I’m here, but also a call out to anyone who is going through a tough time that everyone goes through tough times and it is OK not to be OK. There’s always someone to talk to.

“You’re Not Alone” begins with an upbeat, palm-muted progression on an electric guitar, accompanied by steady drumming and Jimmy’s compelling lyrics relating his perspective about the friend who attempted to take his own life. As sunny acoustic guitar chords and resonant electric bass notes join in for the next verse, the drums kick into a driving beat; while during the choruses, distorted electric guitar chords nicely underscore the lyrics about how “‘Man up’ is a bullshit phrase” and how you can “Never be afraid to talk to someone.” The song’s melodies are optimistic yet with a slight melancholic tinge, complementing the positive mindset reflected in the lyrics quite well, despite the serious issue that they address; and at the same time that “You’re Not Alone” has an important message for mental health that is especially relevant in these times, it is also quite an enjoyable listen, highlighting Jimmy Eff’s brilliant songwriting and superb musicianship. I would highly recommend this track to fans of alternative rock and indie folk alike.
