Carpe Diem “Shadow”

The Hong-Kong indie duo is back once again! Not too long ago they released a soft guitar-driven single titled “Your Face, Your Fate“, a conscious and introspective song about the manifestation of fate. This week they continue the journey with a new single called “Shadow“!

Carpe Diem means “Seize the Day”. The duo consisting of guitarist Keith and vocalist Ada live up to the meaning by making haunting and beautiful songs with deep lyric-writing influenced by aspects of life, dissecting their core meaning. The duo is diverse – previously I got the taste of their gentle earthly folk-inspired sound that caressed like rays of the summer sun. This new single however takes a turn in a completely different direction.

“Shadow” comes about as a windy dark song layered in mystery, with heavy string notes further instilling the feeling of inevitable. The vocals are beautiful in a gloomy sort of way, making the song sound like a folky variant of something out of Hamlet. That sad feeling lasts until the song kicks in a surprise turn into the indie-rock affair with electric guitar buzzing through the energized soundscapes. A clean guitar solo becomes a cherry on the cake like a ray of light before the song returns to its contrasting former state, marking the end with gusts of wind, and highlighting what the song is about. The two opposite sides where neither of which exist with the other.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Shadow is just like adversity in your life. Adversity is inevitable, but difficulties or misfortunes don’t have to keep you from achieving your intended goals and finding the happiness you seek in business and in life. We all are constantly hit with one adversity after the other, most of which we have no control over. However, don’t give up, because “only in the darkness can you see the stars.”

Abandoned dreams signify emotional wholeness, continuity, commitments and honor in life. It is like a lost shadow on the floor, something missing in your life. There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights, the light of all
lights. “All stars were born in the dark… All darkness dies in the light…”

This and “Your Face, Your Fate” are just the beginning for the duo as they spin up to release more new material – here’s what they’re planning, as well as what songs of Carpe Diem are all about:

In 2022, we will continue to release new works one after another, with narrative/poetic lyrics reflecting the meaning of life, and target to launch our first album early next year.

Wish our songs set you through a story-telling journey with thought-provoking / soul-searching cinematic themes.
