The new single from Romain Gutsy is based on the following dreams – here’s “Like an Uyghur in China” dreaming of freedom. Freedom hits differently when you’re part of a minor ethnicity. Forced to function well in the way of life led by the majority and maybe only getting cultural attention from others, the dream of being free with your own people is a big one. As an Estonian, I can definitely relate to that.
ORDER NOW “LIKE AN UYGHUR IN CHINA” BY ROMAIN GUTSY ON BANDCAMP
Seasoned and with a deep guttural voice, the French-based artist Romain Gutsy gives voice to the Chinese minority. An older wise man dressed in his native clothing appears as the song starts playing, quietly standing near his home and looking into the horizon. More oppressive news from the government has dampened the otherwise quite cheerful man and the sunny day feels cold and rainy.
The song’s sad and longing core is surrounded by a fittingly husky indie folk-rock sound that sways about and pulls the listener to dance along. Even though the heart feels like it’s being soaked by the cold rain, Romain Gutsy’s voice has a little bit of humor in it – the dark, somewhat frayed state of mind that in the end keeps the person from completely plunging into depression. So, as it’s drenched in the layered emotions of mostly longing and sadness, Romain Gutsy’s new single is as true to life as it gets to be.
