New York-based trio Occurrence is seizing their moment while getting ready for the release of their new double album Slow Violence on April 7th. The band gives us one more tease of what to expect from their new full-length with the eccentric and dynamic “The Remote Past Tense” – their most genre-defying single yet.

Occurrence’s music was always on the edge of weird, in the best way possible, playing around with experimental electronic sounds and distorted guitars that resulted in truly unique soundscapes and melodies. On “The Remote Past Tense” is no different – and the band is at their very best with it all. Blending the industrial pop leanings of previous singles “Fudge” and “Universe Moves So Fast” with hyperpop and an almost synth-punk vibe, the band wrote the ultimate breakup song.
“This song is about every breakup, ever. I mined all the details of my relationships as if they were film stills or a slide projector show, really trying to make it visually resonant”, singer Cat Hollyer herself says of the song. “This is a difficult one for me to listen to, but I’m glad I wrote what I did”, she concludes.
The ambient of the track is a never-ending swirl of noise coming from all directions – there are guitars, synths, strings, Cat’s honest vocals, and brutal lyrics that talk about a love that’s being lost in its most human details. It’s messy, and it fits the production extremely well.
The result is an incredibly dynamic and powerful song, that slowly creeps its way into your mind and by the end is already permanently settled. With lyrics such as “I loved you on film, across drinks through tables and on answering machines” and “The last thing I want to say is that I never loved you, because it just isn’t true“, the single packs one hell of an emotional punch filled with vulnerabilities and exposed feelings. The most interesting production choice on this is how abruptly it ends, as if in mid-conversation. Like an actual breakup, sometimes things are left unsaid because there wouldn’t be a point anymore.
If their past singles are any indication, Occurrence is on its way to releasing their greatest album so far – both sonically and emotionally, and I can’t wait to hear it.
