Strange Souvenirs – “Coma Cluster”

All the way from Berlin, Germany, Strange Souvenirs is a duo made up of two brothers, Tom & Matt. The band just released their new single, “Coma Cluster”, featuring their producer and “unofficial” third member Cameron James Laing. And this is a wild ride from start to finish.

The duo has made their name with interesting singles over the past few years, and their style of music on “Coma Cluster” is a different beast. Electronic, sample-heavy with a very rock and roll spirit to it, “Coma Cluster” is their first song since 2021. It features a Deftones-esque vibe to it – with less heavy metal riffs and more eerie vocals and electronics. It’s an absolute monster of a song and sounds truly original.

The production and mixing of “Coma Cluster” are remarkable, building up an atmosphere that sets the tension to the skies, until it finally explodes in arpeggiated synths and cacophony drums. It’s jaw-dropping, to say the least. All the while there is a distorted female vocal line from guest Heidi Heidelberg that keeps saying ‘Look at all the flies‘ that sets an eerie tone that’s just barely overwhelming. It’s so good!

“Coma Cluster” sounds like nothing they’ve ever put out before, definitely their weirdest and most intricate composition up to this point, and a thrilling new path for the brothers. The single set their career in motion, bringing something new to their sound that feels fresh, interesting, and just plain weird – and I love it! They did a great job here.
