Kelley’s songs always come with an important message and social commentary, from his debut with “A Mind of Your Own” to “The Point of No Return“; Kelley is always trying (and succeeding) in making music that matters, that has something to say. After the gentle folk gem “The Higher Road“, Kelley is back with his signature guitar-based music with soaring melodies and a thumping heartbeat behind them.
“Give It All Away” touches heavily on the subject of materialism, encouraging us to reassess our actual needs and let superfluous things go. ‘Life is a sacrifice, give it all away‘, he pleads in the chorus. It’s effective and it makes you think – which is a good way to start.
The production on “Give It All Away” blends 80s-inspired rock music with indie blues, with a dash of modern-day Red Hot Chili Peppers thrown in. It sounds feral and thoughtful and there’s a mix of feelings, both melancholia and a sense of urgency throughout the track. Not to mention also several tempo changes along the way and interesting things happening, to captivate your full attention. Garland Kelley’s really outdone himself this time!
