One of the most interesting and inventive indie rock bands we’ve covered from the start, Panem is coming back! Hailing from France, the four-piece band is rediscovering themselves as a way of keeping that creativity flowing, and they just came up with a stellar acoustic rendition of their single “Face Tomorrow”.
“Face Tomorrow” was originally released in 2021 as a part of Panem’s debut Zeitgeist / Absolute Monopoly EP, and this time it got a full-on acoustic treatment and it feels shiny and brand new once again. The guitars from Yacine Aït Amer sound delicate and intimate, at the same time that creates a fiery and passionate atmosphere. Marie Moreau’s lead vocals are strong and clear on this rerecording and shine even brighter against the softness of the instrumentations.
The instrumental bridge before the final chorus is truly something else on this acoustic form, it leaves you breathless with its stunning beauty. “Face Tomorrow” has always been one of the highlights from their debut EP a few years ago, and it’s so very interesting to listen to it like this because it feels so right from the very beginning. Panem has really outdone themselves with this new version of “Face Tomorrow”, inspired by an idea their very own drummer had.
The song was recorded using the same ribbon microphones, the Coles 4038, to capture everything in a very similar way that it was used by the BBC in radio broadcasts in the 50s. This gives the song a timeless feeling to it, that works really well with everything that is going on. Panem chose the absolute right song to rerecord, and it sounds like they are really inspired – and I hope they incorporate some of this acoustic aesthetics on their next brand-new release because it sounds so good.
