American musician Sam Feinstein is gearing up for a return with his long-awaited new single, “Hamster Wheel”, and it’s another absolute banger. It’s been almost a full year since debuted with the excellent “Chasing the Bull“, but now we finally get a glimpse of new music – and the future’s looking good.

“Hamster Wheel” was written about feeling unsatisfied in your day job and living with frustrations of daily life like you’re in a rut and not living your best life. It employs the use of the titular hamster wheel as a way of painting a picture of frustration when you’re unable to live the aspirational and luxurious lifestyle painted by media as the social norm like most of us aren’t. And it does all of this very pertinent social commentary in the form of an 80s-inspired new wave synthpop jam.
Although “Hamster Wheel” is technically a solo effort from Sam, it also marks the return of his synthpop band The Monitors – in which Sam is the singer and bass player. The Monitors have been on hiatus since the loss of one of its founding members, but are now returning as Sam’s live backing band on future releases as well, which is very exciting. Sam’s been known for his solo work as a genre-bender, throwing in elements from pop, ska, indie rock, and new wave, so it’ll be very interesting to hear what they come up with as a fully formed band again.
The production of “Hamster Wheel” highlights Sam’s deep voice very well, as the myriad of instruments and sounds seem to swirl around him and make a very danceable beat. Just like on “Chasing the Bull”, Sam’s lyrics are thoughtful and drenched in irony, making it for a very fun listen even when the subject matter is a serious one. This comes as a rarity in today’s landscape of music, and that’s exactly why Sam’s compositions sound like a breath of fresh air from the get-go. So it’s even more exciting to know that there are several more tracks coming in the near future from Sam with The Monitors, and I can’t wait!
