Arriving as the 50th release from Frank Joshua’s pen, “Houston” explores the depths of uncomfortable fragility and recalibration of self-taking place after a bad misjudgement. Wrapped in soothing yet chilling cinematic dream pop textures, this release represents the stinging regret of hasty perception. Nobody wants to be wrong, but it’s part of our nature and cannot be avoided. Yet the shadowy, swaying song shows that growth comes from facing your wrongdoings and the resulting troubles.
“Messed up in Houston”, a nod to the well-known Apollo 13 phrase, is the basis of the song’s story, acting as a foundation from which the narrative of regret is born. The lyrics, sung with almost a sigh at times, put the widespread feeling of regret and uselessness into captivating, relatable words, allowing listeners to relate on a personal level. Deep disappointment in oneself, the underlying of “Houston”, is unfortunately part of what it’s like to be a human being.

Those weighty yet difficult to explain emotions are also ported into the single’s music video. Featuring clips of bustling city life in old times played off a reel, the movie-like video is overseen by a shadow with a hat, an embodiment of a person facing the fact they’ve messed up big time.
“Houston” and its ethereal, deeply introspective realm serve as another bright example of Frank Joshua’s skill of giving difficult emotions a clear voice. Working together with producer Tony White, the duo continues to craft meaningful and evocative music for the thoughtful and lovers of atmospheric indietronica.
