American band Mad Painter is setting the stage ready for the release of their third album, and just released a new single to promote it. On “Empty Bottles”, they go full on 70s glam rock with excellent dashes of psychedelia, garage rock and bring to the table a new take on such a classic sound. This production style isn’t exactly new for them, as it keeps up very nicely with the sounds explored by the band on their last album Splashed; but there is something about “Empty Bottles” that makes it feel fresh and exciting.

Mad Painter is always incredibly cohesive with their music, taking steps forward and adding new things but without ever making it seem like they’ve sacrificed their own sense of humor and aesthetic. On “Empty Bottles”, we get a brilliant taste of what’s to come and it is so good. Drenched in 70s nostalgia, the keyboards set the mood perfectly and create an instantly recognizable atmosphere. The song is dramatic and cinematic, relying on classic production and just pure fun to its core from start to finish.

The song was written by the band in early 2022 and have been a part of their live set for a little while now – always with great reception from the crowds exactly because of its dynamism and sense of joy. On “Empty Bottles” the band operates on the highest levels of energy and never waver once, keeping up the pace all throughout the track beautifully. Mad Painter did a remarkable job on this track, playing to all of their strengths and fully committing all the way; it’s hard to pull off a song like this but they’ve done it with enviable ease.

“Empty Bottles” disguises itself as a party song, borrowing great elements from 70s classics such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road but in reality, it’s a song about isolation and the pandemic lockdown. Even dealing with a topic that was harsh in inmensurable ways, the band still manages to give it a hopeful and positive tone, finding strength in perseverance and facing the adversities as best as possible with impeccable delivery.

Mad Painter has an energy to them that feels unmatched by anyone else, and they continue to shine through more and more with each new release since the band’s debut way back in 2016. If “Empty Bottles” is any indication, the band are about to outdo themselves once again on their next full-length and it’s a privilege to be able to see all of this happening.
