“Tangerine” is an EP from Meat in Space. With the title track, the artist has captured the essence of grunge mixed with some nods from old-school garage, and alternative rock. The EP offers a blend of fuzzy guitar tones delivered through some very meaty riffs and a serving of thunderous drumming.

These elements are also complemented by some smooth vocals which remind me of early pop-punk or hardcore vocals but with a tinge of the rasp that is necessary to sound good in a grunge setting. Meat in Space takes the usual grunge elements that would be associated with the genre but also spins elements of classic rock and alternative music into its composition to offer the listener a veritable mix of sounds that paint a very pretty picture sonically.
The overall running beat throughout the intro and verse sections of “Tangerine” employs a weird time signature change where the measures sound almost progressive in certain sections because of the way that they switch it up and manage to keep it cohesive throughout the whole song as the chorus offers a much-needed switch back into the usual tropes of grunge songwriting.

These drums are given much-needed width with the fuzzy distortion that is a pleasure to hear through the heavy power chord-laden riffs you hear from the overall soundscape of the track. Besides the chords the guitars offer, Meat in Space keeps us bobbing our heads frantically using the percussive strumming patterns to keep the power chords fully emphasized throughout the song.
Meat in Space has released an EP that can keep you engrossed even if grunge or garage rock isn’t your cup of tea as the composition and production will have you replaying the songs multiple times. Songs like “Ruby Tourmaline” and “Hyperion ham” are a clever change from the rest of the EP as these songs also showcase the musicality and the diversity of the overall EP as they demonstrate the contrast with songs like “Call the Coroner” and “Chromium Dioxide.
The EP instills a feeling of anticipation in you after every song keeping you second-guessing where the music will go next. Throughout these five tracks, there’s one thing you will notice, Meat in Space takes their songwriting with utmost care as this EP demonstrates without a shred of doubt.
“Tangerine” is a must-listen if you are curious about grunge but not only that, it also, piques your interest as a song that will open you to what grunge can do when the creativity of genres outside the mix is added to the composition. These elements turn this album from just another grunge EP to one that deserves your utmost attention, and it will send you on a great journey through these five songs.
Be sure to give this EP a thorough listen and give yourself a listening experience that will surely leave you all pumped up the heavy grooviness that this album encompasses.
