The UK-based jazz musician Neil C. Young has a fresh EP ready for release as part of his new “ReWorks” project. It’s the second installment, which continues the artist rebuilding and repurposing previously hidden hooks and existing patterns. “ReWorks Vol. 2” is a fresh wind of charming new melodies coming in jazz fusion form, and takes our minds for a trip into warm, lush days.

PRE-ORDER ON BANDCAMP NOW!

Neil C. Young makes music together with his brother Richard Young, as well as good friends Alan Whitham and Ben Gonzalez. When together, rather magical things tend to happen in the lines of “I don’t know what exactly is happening, but I like it!”, and thus through great friendship and skilled musicianship, Neil and his band come up with fairly uplifting, colorful and intricate sounds of soulful jazz fusion. Improvisation has a very important place in the band’s sound and is the driving force behind the “ReWorks” project.

The project sees Neil and the band take existing songs from other artists and look for hidden elements with the intention to bring them to the foreground and give the song’s original meaning a new flavor. “ReWorks Vol. 2” is the second part of the four-part project and includes new ideas built from tunes by Marvin Gaye, Olly Murs and Garbielle Aplin, as well as a novelty tune from 1965.

It’s the novelty tune that starts off the EP, and it’s a charming little tune called “A Mouse Lived In a Windowsill in Amsterdam”. Must be a location of great joy and vivid happenings, because the tune itself swirls and dances through its cheerful melodies just like a happy little critter would. Olly Murs’ “Troublemaker” follows with its moody and strong-willed twangy sound of a person that doesn’t take crap from anyone, but is more than happy to cause it.

The second half of this EP consists of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?”, where the rhythm has been changed to give an airier feel with less concrete foundation to give a better idea of a fleeting, unstable nature of life. And finally, there’s Gabrielle Aplin’s “Miss You” with different elements of the track given a center stage. To be more exact, it’s the line of “Will you be my next friend, will you be my last”, that’s been brought out to show its melancholic yet dreamy colors.

If you’re a friend of jazz fusion, this EP should be in the queue by now. It’s a great little record with lots going on from plenty new ideas and wonderful musicianship to the endless amounts of details to notice in each play. The EP is out now. There you go!
