The Muster Point Project’s candid new single “Don’t Give Me Anything” about losing big, is a great win

The Muster Point Project "Don't Give Me Anything"

The latest single from Calgary-based artist Kevin Franco under the name The Muster Point Project is a bolt of lightning through the darkest dark. On “Don’t Give Me Anything” the singer and songwriter continues to evolove his sound into the richest of shapes, bringing together a wide range of instrumentations and seeks inspiration from the classics. Kevin names legendary songwriters that go from John Mellencamp to John Lennon as influences, and it shows very clearly.

“Don’t Give Me Anything” is the latest in a string of successful and magical sounding tunes that followed his brilliant Ship to Shore and 5 KG EPs from last year and brings forth an incandescent glow in the format of 70s rock influences on its production. A song written about trying to accomplish something big and failing, Kevin himself describes the song as ‘loosely documenting the egos encountered in the journey of a failed technology startup’. It is very interesting to listen to something that sounds so classic-coded mentioning such contemporary topics, and that duality is both intriguing and fascinating.

The production on “Don’t Give Me Anything” reaches far beyond the expected, diving head first into David Bowie-esque styles of melody, harmonies and the perfect match between keyboards and guitar riffs. It’s catchy and stays with you for days on end, that precisely is what makes Kevin’s work so enjoyable: his ability to blend the old with the new, attending to both equally and creating something that sounds truly timeless.

“Not many people write songs about losing a million dollars, I did”, Kevin bluntly says about the track. “Why not write a song about the most catastrophic failure of your life?”, he concludes. It is exactly because of such directness and candidness regarding the subject matter that Kevin’s songs work so beautifully.

Even if the specifics aren’t completely universal, the way he strings the words and melodies together makes them sound absolutely rich in detail and nuance. By taking inspiration from such a dreary time and making a song that sounds this upbeat is truly no small feat, especially one that feels so honest and vulnerable at the same time as he asks for people not to feel sorry for him.

“Don’t Give Me Anything” is anything but a massive failure, as it comes across as proof that The Muster Point Project keeps on releasing great music, and it’s so refreshing to listen to Kevin expanding on his sound and going even bigger and bolder.
