American indie rock duo The Pulltops have already been featured here on our blog several times, and it’s so much fun to get to follow an artist in all of their twists and turns over time. Their latest single, “Waiting Here”, comes after the EP Sight Lines that compiled the past singles and gave us a gorgeous rendition of a Creedence Clearwater Revival classic.

“Waiting Here” feels like The Pulltops are turning over a new leaf and ready for a brand-new start. Everything about it sounds interesting and new for them, from the synth bass to the funky and groovy guitar lines. On their new single, the Milwaukee-based duo takes their indie rock to uncharted territories, experimenting with a different production style that suits them beautifully. The way the several elements slowly come together into an epic proportion, the crystal-clear vocals and impeccable harmonies; “Waiting Here” is truly a new soundscape for them.
Tom Crowell and Mark Pierret have been playing together for the better part of two decades now, and they have already experimented so much with their sound over the years, from country and americana to garage indie rock. That is exactly why something like “Waiting Here” feels even more special; it sounds as if the band continues to push themselves into trying out new things even with so much history behind them. It’s refreshing, complex and, frankly, just sounds so good. By the time we get to the final chorus, there is so much going on: pianos, keyboard lines, 70s inspired guitar riffs and a gorgeous melody.

But some things never change and “Waiting Here” still is, at its core, a Pulltops song. It features their characteristic indie pop sensibility, with strong hooks and catchy harmonies that feel comforting and warm. The thematic of the song rely on explorations of the human condition, such as introspection, loneliness and the constant urge of waiting for something to change – topics that aren’t unfamiliar to the band. On their new single, The Pulltops pull off something that most artists won’t even dare to try, which is to make the change and take the bold step towards something new, all while still remaining honest and true to themselves.
This sounds like the beginning of a very exciting new era, and I’m already at the edge of my seat waiting here for what more is to come from them.
