English singer and songwriter Roisin O’Hagan just released her latest single, “Midnight Indigo”, and with it she is more than ready to take over everything. Sonically, it’s a departure from her great previous country pop releases such as “Wild & Free“, and her new direction also works incredibly well for her style.
Growing up in a musical household and citing names that range from Taylor Swift to Bruce Springsteen and Counting Crows as influences, Roisin O’Hagan has been encouraged to pursue music since an early age. The artist is still incredibly young and yet showcases the experience of someone who’s being doing this all their life, and more importantly knows exactly where she wants to go.
Featuring an amalgamation of pop rock and a dash or two of electronics here and there, “Midnight Indigo” feels like Roisin O’Hagan is entering her very own Speak Now era and it is absolutely mesmerizing. The growth she has been showing with each new release is breath-taking, sounding more mature in both vocal performance as well as in the songwriting itself. This new single comes to illustrate all of this in a precise, articulate and concise way that feels like a natural evolution of her soundscape.
This said maturity extends into her lyricism as well, as the artist is taking on more and more of an adult and complex themes. On “Midnight Indigo”, she sings about a toxic relationship between two people who can’t seem to break free from it. “There is some kind of undeniable, toxic passion between them that neither can leave alone. That is until eventually one takes the power and leaves the situation with no real explanation, apology or closure”, she herself says about the track. It is indeed a very intricate dynamic that is being sung, driven by a sense of anxiety and angst that can be felt through Roisin’s impeccable production and vocal performance.
“Midnight Indigo” marks the beginning of a new chapter for Roisin, who’s already got several other releases planned for the next months. It’s a very exciting time, as she undertakes a brand-new sound with endless possibilities. From here on in, she can do anything and I’m ready for it.
