Scarlet Mill are back with yet another chapter taken from their upcoming sophomore album, and “Just” marks a very different style and tone for their narrative. The Dutch duo are crafting a concept album centered around the love story of between a sailor and his muse, and each song is another piece of said story being woven by the band as they navigate a myriad of different sounds, influences and production styles.
On “Just” by Scarlet Mill, we get to the halfway point in it’s also where everything changes. The track features a shift towards a jazzy and trip-hop atmosphere, contrasting the European folky glam rock inclinations of previous singles. As the narrative advances, our sailor had awashed on the Parisian coast and is miraculously revived but has lost his memory. Now he encounters the mysterious manager of a night club, an androgynous character who seems to know everything about him. The band does an incredible job in portraying all of this through the music, that sounds eerie and distantly backed by strong guitar riffs and dive into the trip-hop.
It’s another stunning example of how creative the Dutch duo is on their approach to storytelling, songwriting and production. “Just” is a track that follows Scarlet Mill as they explore landscapes that are captivating, dark and fascinating as a true portmanteau of sounds and inspirations. It’s a very interesting step forward for the band, who continues to amaze the listener with rich textures of guitars and synths while also opening up room for conflicting human emotions and experiences unlike most.
As they continue to weave a story of epic proportions through their songs, Scarlet Mill keep on expanding their darkwave into uncharted territories. Their experimental vein is at its best on “Just”, that sounds and feels bolder than anything they’ve ever done. There is a constant sense of unease and anxiety that rummages through this track, like an expertly shot scene in a thriller when you know things are about to veer off into the unknown. Their intricate storytelling is perfectly matched by smart production choices, changes in rhythm, tempo and pacing and everything about this culminates into a cinematic and dynamic song that keeps you on the edge of your seat, eagerly waiting for the conclusion.
