Somewhere around this time four years ago, Numen Records released the first Frank Joshua single “Panic in the Kitchen”. Now, in celebration of its 4 year anniversary, Frank has prepared a new version of this song, turning the original piano-led ballad into an ethereal post-rock experience.

A quiet beginning with a melody as haunting as some of Sigur Rós songs starts off the recreation of “Panic on the Kitchen”, dubbed Whitelight Version. While the original stays intimate and close to acoustic elements, this one dives deeper into floating atmospheres of indietronica and post-rock. Frank’s ever-evocative vocals speaking of the fleeting, hard-to-pinpoint moments fit snugly in between swells of strings and uplifting percussion.

This soaring synth-led piece joins the much calmer and more melancholic original as well as two other songs to form an EP. First of which is “Sense Life”, an upbeat and dancing tune on the sense(lessness) of living, which joins acoustic with electronic beats to form quite a party. The last song on the EP is Tim Angrave’s version of “If I”, which is considerably more restrained and lives in the vast inner space, in a huge state of solitude.
With four very distinct songs inside, the anniversary EP is a solid package of the variety of music Frank Joshua is capable of creating. As a 39th release in the 4 years of actively releasing music, it’s just a taste of what Frank really has to offer, an excellent taste nonetheless, as there’s a little bit of everything from the dreamy and strange, to some dancing moments in the wilderness of one’s own head.
