Blake goes the power pop path on incredible new album “Louder Than Sound”

Talented british artist Blake returns with THE brand-new album Louder Than Sound just after the release of his Plainsongs from last year. The Wiltshire-based artist has proven himself to be a quite prolific and fearless musician, constantly trying out new things, sounds and production styles and, in the process, releasing music that is fresh, interesting and surprising.

On his latest effort Louder Than Sound, Blake took power pop as a main source of inspiration for his desired sound. The artist himself comments on how much Welsh rock band Badfinger influenced him on this songwriting process and even included an homage to them: “The penultimate track, ‘Something About You’, is dedicated to the band and is made up of lyrics from their songs”, he says. But until we get to the end of the record, there is so much that has already happened.

Focused on creating catchy guitar-pop songs with undeniable hooks and melodies, Blake came up with an album that feels like sunshine. From the very first song “She’s Inside My Heart”, we already get the feel of what’s in store for us: a fun time. The record is filled to the brim with impeccable pop rock choruses that resonate with his background in classic 60s sound; but this time it’s faster, more polished, and utterly electrifying. If the quick-paced garage rock-inspired opener somehow didn’t reel you in, I’m positive that the jangle pop of “Business Hours” will.

A light-hearted track about having fun once you leave work, “Business Hours” hits you with one hook after another and melodies that stay with you for the rest of the day. That is Blake’s driving force on this album: to make songs that will light up any mood and stick with the listener. He most definitely succeeds, as there are so many earworms on this record it’s even hard to choose from on this thrilling and exhilarating ride.

Co-produced alongside Jacob Tyghe and recorded at the legendary Nam Studios, home of Eye to the Telescope by KT Tunstall and several works by the likes of Robert Plant, The Magic Numbers and Killing Joke, Blake took in all of that inspiration and delivered an album that sounds like a greatest hits compilation. Across the twelve tracks that make up Louder Than Sound, we get to see Blake experimenting with power pop and classic rock structures and bending them to his will – either on the Teenage Fanclub-esque ballad “Strawberry Way” or the swift pacing of love song “Everything About Her”.

Louder Than Sound is a record that surrounds itself with pure and unadulterated joy from start to finish. You can tell by listening to it how much fun Blake and his band are having, and that passionate delivery makes it an album that is impossible not to like.

The artist approaches his songwriting with genuine sensibility and intimacy, no matter the route he’s chosen to follow, and that is what makes this truly remarkable. Blake truly outdid himself by releasing not only one, but two great albums. Plainsongs and Louder Than Sound have different and yet very complementary aesthetics, which only comes to cement Blake as an artist who can do anything and is here for the long haul. And thank God for that!
