Canadian indie rock act fxrrvst released an album a handful of singles and EPs between 2017 and 2021, and went on a brief hiatus after the Dear Friend, Pt 2 EP. This year, the duo came back with their brand-new single “Lavender” back in April, and has since shared two other singles. Now, their long-anticipated new EP Constable Hotel is finally out and shows the self-described “friendly neighbourhood-queer alternative/indie/emo/whatever-you-want-to-call-us” band at their absolute highest.

Constable Hotel is made up of four tracks, including previous single “Hate Has No Home Here“, and shows the duo navigating through complex feelings and influences. Taking inspiration from late-90s emo and 2010s indie rock, fxrrvst’s music’s bursts with passion and honest emotions never shying away from life’s struggles and difficulties – be it either relationships, queer identity or political beliefs. Their sound, expertly revived and explored on this EP, navigates intricate production that mashes up electric and acoustic instruments creating a sound that transports you back to the heyday of acts like An Horse or Tegan and Sara.

Their approach to songwriting is deeply rooted in a hopeful feeling of overcoming adversities with a hopeful tone, or at least trying to. “CBAYAOM”, the second track of their recent comeback, explores frustrations and the weight of other people’s expectations with an emotional vocal delivery from main singer Holly. When she sings the titular chorus of “I can’t be all you ask of me“, you believe she’s truly doing her best. The same feeling of saturation is at the center of “Hate Has No Home Here”, a political piece and anthem that begs for empathy and change that also serves as the emotional centerpiece of the EP, with dramatic twists and a cathartic release.

The final song is “Nightmare Dreaming”, the first entirely self-written and self-produced by the duo themselves. Highlighting their artistic and professional growth, it follows an incredible dynamic of starting out quiet and constant building until it takes your breath away. Exploring textures and weaving sounds together towards a climactic explosion of energy, “Nightmare Dreaming” talks anxiety and isolation.

There is a haunting and eerie atmosphere to the song, leaving you slightly uncomfortable and delving into uneasy territory. This sonic surroundings mirror perfectly the emo aspects of its lyrics, that examines the idea of how your own consciousness can be both a place of comfort as well as have a dark side to it that, according to the band, makes you “you question ‘Can i get out of it alive?’” as sung on the chorus. “Nightmare Dreaming” is a masterpiece, a delicate approach to mental health that is rooted on the exploration of its consequences on mundane activities.

Blending emo and intricate indie rock, struggles and fun with equal measure of importance, fxrrvst crafted a short EP that feels like a condensation of everything they’ve done in the past while still expanding upon their sound and pushing it forward. Picking up exactly where Dear Friend (Parts 1 &2) left off, the Toronto-based duo celebrates their own return to music and invites us to come back along. In just four tracks, they make an impactful comeback and deliver an unfiltered human experience that feels essential and real.
