Bristol-based POP-ROCK act Chandra, led BY talented musician Chandra Nair, has always had a high-energy type of sound. INFECTIOUS melodies infused with honest-to-God optimism are a crucial part of their music, so the fact that they released a Christmas song shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. “Christmas Hugs” is their first HOLIDAY-INSPIRED offering, and it beams with the kind of inner light that only a Chandra song could.
The end-of-the-year holidays are a special time, filled with warmth and love that celebrates the year that’s passed while allowing us to plan for the one that’s about to come. On “Christmas Hugs”, the band is out to do just that: dive deep into the joy, compassion, and love that fills the December air.
“It’s as if people give themselves permission to be more friendly, more charitable, and more forgiving than they ever would be at any other time of year”, the frontman himself says about the track as he explains why chose to put it in a song. “We wanted to write a song that celebrates this wonderful transformation of the human spirit but also a song that acts like a great big Christmas hug in, and of, itself”, he concludes.
“Christmas Hugs” is a banger as well. Borrowing the classic melody from 4 Non Blondes iconic “What’s Up?” Chandra created their own brand of holiday magic. A track filled with good feelings, hopeful undertones, and catchy guitar riffs, “Christmas Hugs” stands as a powerful reminder of what Christmas is ultimately all about. Chandra rides this wave all across the track’s music video, an integral part of the song experience.
A celebration of optimism and positivity, the music video was shot at The Big Yurt in Berkeley, California, and portrays the band in full Christmas costume performing the song. Amongst them are children running and goofing around the Christmas tree stacked with presents and joy abound. The video shows how much fun everyone is having with their intricately knitted hideous sweaters under sparkling lights. “Christmas Hugs” is filled to the brim with love to be spread around, making it a perfect carrol to bring a smile even to the Grinch-iest of the skepticals regarding the magic of Christmas time.
Bringing with themselves all of the melody-driven excitements found on their debut EP Lifted from a few months back, Chandra is ready to continue the mission of being the spokespeople for positive change. On their Holiday single Chandra invites everyone to a place of happiness and fun, stacked with glee and cookies for all. Especially in a time that can be hard for some people for numerous reasons, a track like “Christmas Hugs” shimmers as the beacon of hope and laughter that we could all have more of in our daily lives.
