“Not By Design” is an exploration of the life, work, relationships and thoughts of a 40-year-old person close to a mid-life crisis, where the direction is unsure, the choices are difficult, and the choices made lead to doubts
The EP as a whole:
There’s a beautifully nostalgic vibe all around “Not By Design”. It carries a wonderful analog sound recorded with pristine technique and precision. The drums, the bass, and the guitars share mellow Indie elements, while the magical synths act as the cherry on top.
Monrad’s voice:
He has a very low and resonant timbre, although he’s not technically singing, he uses his commanding tone to share his conversational method. Unconventional, but effective to conduct emotions through his lyrical stories.
The tracks:
“On Fire”, “Not Yet”, and “Caught Up” are the opening tunes in this marvelous work. Minimalistic, ethereal, and dreamy, the songs capture both loneliness and an intense yearning for answers in midst of uncertainty.
In addition to Monrad’s singing, you will also hear the melodies of a mysterious female singer.
“On fire” is a song about making choices in life. Not easy, and surrounded by doubt. “Not yet” explores feelings of disbelieve, hopelessness after a break-up. “Caught Up” searches for that exact moment in time where you just want to let go, when the only thing you want to do is to escape, as far away as possible, leaving your responsibilities behind.
“Whatever It Takes”, “Rumble” and “The Game” are the last three songs that perfectly close the EP, with a vibrant collection of jazzy inspired rhythms and riffs.
