Red Skies Mourning crafts a universe of sound and texture on new album “Myosotis”

American singer and songwriter Chris Aleshire returns with Myosotis, the brand-new album from his Red Skies Mourning project. On his sophomore effort, Chris is joined by producer CESAR and co-writer Ryan Curtis creating a very interesting blend of synthpop, one that borrows from the grandiose of early 2000s alternative rock and gives it a modern contemporary with. The big synths are flavoured with narratives that follow Chris’s life events and observations, coming together to form a soundscape of unique beauty.

Myosotis comes a little over two years since his excellent self-titled debut, but in the meantime the trio kept themselves busy with a great run of singles. Amongst them are “Borderline” and “See You There”, tracks that made their way into the album, as well as fresh renditions of modern pop classics “As It Was” by Harry Styles and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things”.

The landscape explored by Chris on the latest Red Skies Mourning album is an incredibly plural one, exploring several different ways of making pop music led by synthesizers – and they do it all with fervor and urgency.

Taking inspiration from a myriad of sources, the sounds crafted on Myosotis stand out as compelling and passionate with a lovely thread of simplicity behind them. Tracks like “Listen to Me” show the trio emulating pulsating synthwaves with rapid-fire beats that recall both Robyn’s seminal classic Body Work as well as Bastille’s debut album. It’s very impressive stuff, beautifully produced and intricately woven together by narrative-driven lyricism.

Across the fifteen tracks that compose Myosotis, we see the trio exploring everything from lovelorn ballads to social criticism. “Obvious”, one of the highest highlights, is a midtempo dream-come-true that deals with technology’s impact on human connections with earnest delivery and a real sense of concern.

On other tracks, such as “Call It a Day”, we listen to these guys having fun with sounds and textures crafting interesting beats and dynamic changes that keep you at the edge of your seat – all while Chris exhibits some of his best vocal melodies and sings about a relationship that is beyond saving. “We’ve been here long enough, let’s call it a day” he abruptly ends, leaving the listener somewhat unsure of what has just happened.

That ever-present dichotomy between the subject matter and the sounds being presented creates an atmosphere of freshness that puts all their creativity on display. From the gentle guitar notes of “Under Your Spell” to the big big beats heard on “Over and Outta Here”, Chris & co. excel at reeling you in with a warm and inviting synthpop production that oscillates its mood constantly. On their second full-length record, Red Skies Morning perfectly creates an entire universe of sound that feels even richer and more nuanced than their debut. Myosotis shows the band going all in with everything, and ultimately creating a synthpop work that stretches itself across genres with genuine care and thought-provoking ideas.
