American musician Micheal Fordays is back again with “Here at the Gates”, a taste of his upcoming album The Odds of Magic. The track, originally written in 2022, comes as an adventurous power pop masterpiece that recalls 90s legends Teenage Fanclub. Micheal is no stranger to taking alternative rock influences and making them his own, and on “Here at the Gates” it’s no different.

The track deals with themes such as endings and beginnings, showcasing Micheal’s heartfelt lyricism and storytelling. Capturing the essence of self-discovery, “Here at the Gates” carries out an introspective thematic and tries to answer questions like ‘What happens after things end?’. The philosophical and reflective nature of the song wanders freely, realizing that the reflection on those topics is more important than the answers themselves. It’s a very mature track, coming from one artist at his very peak.
Produced by Michael himself alongside Dave Klein, “Here at the Gates” comes as a volatile interpretation of college radio rock from the 90s. Featuring larger-than-life melodies and killer percussion, the track rummages through with excellent pacing and incredibly well-placed emphatic harmonies. There is so much depth to “Here at the Gates”, and yet it still sounds easygoing, playful and uplifting all throughout.
“I wanted it to reflect that feeling of being at the end but not wanting it to end just yet”, the artist comments about their approach to the production. The sense of something that is still ongoing really shines through it, almost sounding like the song has no real beginning nor end and we were just given a glimpse of something greater.
It’s a very interesting structure, managing to keep things fresh and exciting while taking advantage of the nostalgic influences and sounds. Micheal Fordays says that even though the song was written originally a few years ago, it fits perfectly on the new album The Odds of Magic and after hearing “Here at the Gates” I cannot wait for the rest.
