Los Angeles-based indie pop artist Julia Kate returns with “Fake Friends”, her first single of the year, following the success of last October’s “beverly hills“. On “Fake Friends” Julia delivers an energetic track that shows the artist experimenting with new shades of pop sounds that sound and feel extremely modern even with its 80s new wave inspirations.
Channelling contemporary acts like Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo as well as classics such as Go-Go’s and Blondie, Julia Kate creates a fascinating track that shines with charm and authenticity. “[the song] is a reflection of my broad musical sensibilities rather than it being about a particular incident or person in my life”, the artist herself comments on her latest single, before complementing the inspirations behind it and her lifelong admiration of Debbie Harry.
“Fake Friends” is like a bolt of lightning, combining key elements from new wave with the nuance that comes from today’s pop landscape very easily. On her new single Julia impresses with confident and dynamic vocals, crafting a track that feels timeless and unique. Her lyrical inspirations come from society’s social media obsessions, reflecting on how most of her generation has experienced at one point or another the fallout of hypocritical friendships.
“With the rise of social media, almost everyone my age (20) has a friend that is kind to your face but speaks poorly of you behind your back. Hence the concept behind the song was to mesh the energy of 80’s female New Wave and counter that liveliness with the vigor of 2025 lyrics”, she ultimately concludes.

Julia Kate proves herself once again as a very unique and interesting voice in pop music. She’s comes as a refreshing new artist that continues to impress with her singular vision and perspective, and “Fake Friends” is a delightful step into a new direction for her.
She’s never sounded like this before, so confident in her own aristry and self-assured in both lyricism as well as performance. By tapping into the sounds of female-led new wave bands from the 80s as a main source of inspiration, Julia struck gold and is more than ready to take on the world with her talent – and I’m already on the front row, eagerly anticipating what else she’ll come up with from here on in.
