On January 7th, Wilhelm reveals his newest body of work, a full-length indie folk album dreamily titled “Wake Me in the Sunrise”. Roots deep in themes of personal experiences and dressed in warm, soft and intimate sound of lo-fi folk, the album speaks of life the way it is, often damned, but also sprinkled with lots of little moments of beauty.

The release is a journey with 9 little stops along the way, and is best experienced as one cohesive listen, launching with the introspective starter track “Midnight Caller on the Moon” deciphering the fragile and the fleeting emotions. From then on, the listener is lost floating in Wilhelm’s delicate vocals echoing in spacious folky soundscapes. The essence of loner folk with more warmth added to the instrumental side.
One has to strip away all excess layers to get to the core, and Wilhelm did the same while writing this release. Using the power of minimalism and 4-track Tascam multitracker, more space is given to the crushing feelings and those tender vocals, which occasionally get frayed from the weight of the matters of the heart. Emotion-wise and also production-wise this one is the rawest release from Wilhelm to date.

This album stands on the convergence zone of current and past, with past events affecting the current life. Thus, there are strong threads of nostalgia woven into the sound, which is giving the already highly emotional and intimate record more potency to find its way to the listeners’ souls, and to resonate there. Even if the experiences re-visited and feelings dissected have personal roots, they are also universal.
“Wake Me in the Sunrise”is the third album coming from Wilhelm, the solo project led by the frontman of Murnau and The House Flies. Moody indie rock tinted with elements from all over the place, and complex arrangements usually feature in his discography, offering haunting and emotion-stirring listening experience. Now, Wilhelm reaches a whole different level of haunting, one of an intimate kind.
