Coma Beach’s lyricism borrows many thoughts and ideas from literature, from the existentialist to the satire, and things are no different on these songs. The Scapegoat’s Agony as a whole is an album that follows an unnamed anti-hero going through life’s painful tribulations and emotional turmoils, much like on Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Gadot. The Passion/Bliss EP focuses on said character’s story at the darkest of times, and the band delivers the news in the best DIY punk fashion.

“Passion” follows the character in the midst of realization that his troubled mind is giving in and finds him longing for feeling anything, as his emotional well-being is shattered. It’s a slow burner, featuring raw and raspy vocals from frontman B. Kafka and steady guitar riffs that eventually turns into a Sex Pistols-like ball of fire just as the character’s agony grows larger and larger. It’s a bleak track that shines a light on everyday struggles with mental health with honesty and truth. Definitely the emotional centrefold of The Scapegoat’s Agony, this version of “Passion” is slightly shorter, making the punch hit even harder.

On the other hand, “Bliss” takes things even further both in narrative as well as in passionate delivery. The track opens with a grungy riff that recalls immediatelly to the likes of Nirvana and Melvins, and soon floods itself with distortion and an incredibly catchy guitar riff. It’s a very dynamic track that changes its own direction midway and follows the character through a full mental breakdown in the form of apocalyptic visions and the lovecraftian realisation that nothing can be done as the cycles will repeat themselves again and again.

The EP then follows with radio edits for the songs “Astray (Fallen Angel)”, “Nothing Right” and “The Final Door”, making it an incredibly cohesive listen. The last three songs seem to deal with the aftermath of everything, as the character begs for meaning on “Nothing Right” and finds himself in actual Hell on “The Final Door”. It’s very interesting to observe how well these tracks work together, especially considering that it’s a completely different tracklist from the original album.

This selection from Coma Beach stands as a celebration of their past work as well as bringing new life and meaning to the tracks. By rearranging their own songs in a new way, the narrative created by the band seems urgent, real and incredibly human. It’s a downward spiral that feels as entering Dante’s Inferno, made with direct lyricism and fiery punk rock production in a way that very few other artists would even dare.
