Last year Bristol-based indie rock act Chandra released their proper debut EP Lifted, showing that musical versatility and an overall positive attitude can go a long way. Now the band is promoting their single “Overload”, the closing track of the record, and one of ITS standout tracks. Fronted by singer and guitarist Chandra Nair, their music does a great job OF portraying warmth and optimism and perhaps “Overload” is their most tender example of that.
It’s a track that slows down their usual pop punk stylings for three and a half minutes of introspection. On this new single the band invites us to a journey of reflection on both ourselves as well as the state of the world around us, tackling briefly themes of natural disasters and man-made offenses against ourselves. But, as usual, Chandra spins that perspective into a heartfelt and powerful message of hope.
As the trio urges their listeners not to let the bad news envelop everything completely, it also gives us the time to allow the fear and grief to find their place. No one can be happy and positive every second of the day, and this release is a prime example of a song that lets you feel all of it before reminding you that there is still good to be found once those sentiments pass. On the final track that closes their EP, Chandra finds that balance perfectly and ends in a remarkably positive perspective asking us to ‘overload the world with love’.
The music video that accompanies the track pays homage to the victims of such disasters, from the wars in Ukraine to those living in fear of their newly-elected fascist governments, giving people a place of transformation and peace. By reeling in their urgent and fast-paced sounds for a bit, the band shines with thoughtful lyricism and manages to find beauty and hope even amongst the chaos.
And as they do that, we can’t help but do it too. It is their masterpiece up to this point, as “Overload” lets everything fall in its right place and allows for the grief to turn into hope. Sometimes that is the most powerful and most needed thing of all, and Chandra absolutely knows that.
