Neil C. Young’s newest release, a cover of Madonna’s “Crazy For You”, is not the sort of cover you would most likely expect. Where the original golden hit stood above the smoky dancefloor of romance like a classic love song would, Neil’s version finds its way to love through an ENTIRELY different, previously unseen lens.

The voyage into love starts with a weightless, slightly eery multitone introduction, similar to some sort of space expedition movie right before doing the first hyperjump. In time, those chords slowly give way to electric guitar along with spaced-out drums. A jazz-fusion landscape is fully opened and sings the melody of Crazy For You, now in the center of the stage instead of the side.
Be sure to sit back and relax as this is not a short little journey. The guitar desires to retell the findings from the veiled insides of the pop tune. Together with the deep warm bass guitar and easy yet precise drums, new landscapes are brought up to the eyes of imagination, and soon the synth chords rejoin to add tension and that sweet twinge of eeriness. It’s a long pleasure for a perfect Friday evening.
This single is part of Neil C. Young’s ongoing project called ReWorks. It’s currently on Volume 3 and includes adventurous, highly explorative journeys into songs, pulling them apart, putting the pieces together in a different way, and most importantly, uncovering hidden jewels. Focus is no longer on the immediately tangible, the lyrics, but moved on to other layers of the song reorganised in jazz-fusion form.
Jazz is Neil C. Young’s favorite genre to write music. This skilled musician speaks worlds through his guitar and does it so well that he has been nominated three times for Grammy Awards. During the time spent in music, new paths form naturally and take quite far away from the initial starting point. Whatever might have been on the mind at first will be shaken off very soon and replaced by guitar melodies finding a new song to sing.
