American singer songwriter and musician Ray Johnson is back with his fifth studio effort, Other Times and Other Places, a record that comes from a very personal and introspective place alongside musician David Bieritz. The americana stylings in production, like heard on Ray Johnsons’s previous work as well, continue to take center stage and create atmospheres of boiling anticipation that reveal themselves at a slow and simmering pace.

Other Times and Other Places marks the artist’s first full-lenght release since 2023’s Appealing to Angels, making Ray one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of the genre. On his latest worh, Ray Johnson explores the americana setting with quiet confidence, crafting melodic atmospheres that give off roadtrip energy through the countryside. It’s a record that takes it time and is proud of the ‘background music’ sentiment, unveiling itself as a journey that is shaped by your own attention span.
The fact that Other Times works so damn well as bakground music isn’t in any way a negative critique; and only comes to cement Ray Johnson’s work as a key influence in one of country’s most segmented subgenres with graceful enthusiasm. As the tracks go on, the listeners may find themselves drifting in and out of focus and no matter which moment you tune back in, there is something to be gained from it with careful precision.
The Illinois-based musician does a remarkable job in blending in alternative music to his americana settings, creating unique atmospheres that instantly bring names like David Bowie to mind; like heard on “Hurting Me This Way”. The singer also borrows from 60s jangle pop and psychedelia, as well as 90s power pop, in order to create his own brand of uplifting indie-country-pop. On Other Times the musician expands his signature sounds into a myriad of different directions, only to pull back and ultimately tie every sound together with his own peculiar vision.

The music videos for “Isn’t That True” and last project’s “A Menu Full of Dreams” also play a pivotal role in the artist’s new release. On the first, the third song from newest album, brings visuals that perfectly align with the song’s themes and shows us a couple dining at a fancy restaurant intertwined with flashes from cozy times. The video portrays an intimate love story through the ages, flowing seamlessly alongside Ray’s lyricism and resulting in a classic and timeless story of companionship and loyalty.
The other video, taken from the Appealing to Angels album, highlights the track “A Menu Full of Dreams” and evokes feelings of the hopefulness that comes from a first date as well as the unfathomable passage of time as something quick and final. The nostalgic video follows the female character as she wanders through life, always waiting for someone to come along and share the daydreams and wonders she faces alone. It’s a beautiful portrait of hopefulness, giving us glimpses of what an ideal life could be like.
Those are some of the thematics explored by Ray on Other Times and Other Places, it’s a record that follows daily life at its most intimate and captures its small moments of joy and happiness as well as the painful and complex times.
“As you listen to each song, you will realize that Ray has the ability to write strong lyrics through solid storytelling. Using strong imagery, exceptional use of metaphors and similes, he is able to create music within numerous genres ranging from soft acoustic ballads/love songs to acoustic pop/rock folk pieces that are memorable, enjoyable and appealing”, as his work has been described on his own press kit. And there really isn’t much more to add, in the best possible way.
Ray navigates through his own soundscapes juxtaposing influences that come from the most unusual places, and yet he still manages to make his sound a coherent and cohesive ride. Channelling legends like Willie Nelson as well as modern country pop talents, Ray Johnson crafts his own path through americana and beyond. Led by powerful storytelling and impeccable midtempo production, Other Times and Other Places stands as an album that fulfills all of the potential the singer and songwriter exhibited since his debut single “Bleed” in 2019.
He never gets ahead of himself and allows the proper time for each song to simmer and find its own voice. Other Times and Other Places is a marvelous record that unveils itself as an ode to the past as well as a bold step forward. Mixing oldschool americana with a sensible indie pop vein, Ray Johnson brings forth a singular vision of modern country music that feels refreshing and cool at the same time that pays its homages to past artists who’ve paved his way. It’s a product of admiration and reverence for the genre, launching it forward with intimate lyricism and solidifying his own path on the artistic landscape.
