Swedish-born, London-based artist Skar de Line has been an impressive force on the independent music scene, creating dramatic tracks that shine with ever-evolving pace and thought-provoking lyrics. The musician returns with new single “Vignette”, his first since the release of his debut EP Reset early last YEAR AND brings forth an atmospheric song about the duality between the power and the fear that a blank paper represents to an artist.

Skar crafts a stringful of lush melodies that keep running ever more frantically, as his vocals go from soft whispers to desperate pleas with unnerving precision. The dynamic stylings of its production make for a breath-taking experience, enhanced by Skar’s cinematic delivery and cryptic lyricism. “Vignette” explores the vastness of possibility, like standing alone in an open field unsure about which way to go. It’s relentless in its composition and shows a new side to his artistry that feels more stripped-back and experimental than anything he’s done before.
The artist creates a defiant track that borrows nu-metal dynamics and seems to run from it at the same time as his vocals get more and more urgent. As the drama increases with wild string arrangements and sharp pianos, Skar’s poignant lyrics add to the claustrophobic feeling of the sound crescendo taking over in an uncontrollable manner. By the time the song ends, you’re panting as if running a marathon – but still quite not at the finish line yet.

“Vignette” is made complete by a self-directed music video that elevates its dramatic qualities to cinematic heights. Black-and-white shots of nature are intertwined with Skar in screaming colour as he gets ready to start painting; but everything that touches the canvas fades into nothingness and the paints lose color as they drip in the ground. It’s a moment of stillness that feels devastating in its sincerity of an artist being haunted by inspiration itself.
In literature, vignettes are short and impressionistic scenes that capture one particular moment or idea before quickly coming to an end – and that is exactly what Skar de Line is singing about on this latest single. “Vignette” captures the stillness of inspiration, the moment in which the thought is forming without actual shape. Its fragility is paper-thin, as it could just as well dissipate leaving no traces behind – and that is the dread looming over Skar at this instant in space and time: the inability to create.
