British quartet The Trusted is on the verge of releasing their brand new EP Iridescence, their fourth since the band’s inception back in 2017. Over the years The Trusted has been sharpening their sound and honing their songwriting, slowly becoming one of the most interesting acts in the indie rock sphere in years. Things are no different on Iridescence, their most colourful and eclectic collection yet.

The Southend-on-Sea band unveils new sides of their indie rock through the use of unique textures and influences in a refreshing manner. Iridescence shows the band fully diving into some of those sounds head on, crafting an ambitious sound that is richly complex and delivers the same amount of light-hearted fun as it does real emotions. Citing names like Elvis Costello and The 1975 as sources of inspiration, The Trusted created an EP that elevates their sound with thoughtful lyricism and comforting melodies at the same time that shoots for new territory without ever missing.
Iridescence is a dynamic and thrilling ride through all of The Trusted’s facets done with incredible care, as they navigate several different inspirations and pull all of them off. Blending pop sensibility with feelings of timelessness, like expertly portrayed on opener “The Lightning” as well as the urgent, punk sounds of “Self Destruct“, the band creates an EP that beams with novelty and expands itself across the boundaries of genre and is fearless in its experimentation – “Miracle Face” features big pop melodies and chords distorted through vocal effects that still feel inviting.
This streak of successful experiments that foray into new soundscapes is even more present on the two new additions that the EP brings. Exploring new wave musings through creative lenses, “Overdrive (Switch Off)” is a track that tackles the subject of overstimulation and feeling of burnout. It’s a particularly pressing song that feels like venting in a therapy session as it bravely asks for help in making those feelings stop. It’s an honest take on modern affairs, bringing to light intimate thoughts of universal relatability without the fear of judgement.
The stunning closer, the title track “Iridescence”, unravels as a powerful message of joy. With delicate vocal delivery and an atmosphere that feels loving and comforting, the song is a heartfelt ballad with immaculate pacing and incredible attention to detail. It shows the band’s ability to delve into the ethereal, dream pop territory as it incorporate ever-growing waves of synths that culminate into an alluring ocean of sound with overlapping melodies. It’s absolutely breath-taking, and the most perfect note to end this EP on.
Iridescence is the most impressive collection coming from The Trusted yet, highlighting their versatility through experimentation and coming off as a validation of their artistic and personal growth over the years.
