C-Beem’s new album “Oberon Effect” is a journey through the magical woodlands of memory

C-Beem article cover

English artist Chris Mills is an extremely prolific electonic music producer that releases music under the name C-Beem, creating sounds often influenced by sci-fi settings and post punk nuances. His latest album Oberon Effect, due to early March, however, shows us a BRAND-NEW side of his artistry that is FULLY VISUALIZED and intently focused in what it sets out to do. It’s his fourth album since Chris started putting out music in 2023, establishing himself as a very versatile and interesting musician.

On Oberon Effect the Leicester-based producer creates an intricately woven piece that beams with big synths and brightens up his darkwave inspirations; while still remaining true to his own post-punk aesthetics and adding classic rock inspirations and instruments. The album opens with the “Oberon Effect” title track, making reference to the mythological character of Oberon, the King of the Fairies, and it sets the tone beautifully for what else is to come: an adventurous journey through sight and sound filled with magical realism and one-of-a-kind experimentations with new wave.

Taking inspiration from childhood memories of wandering through the Charnwood Forest and the woodlands of Leicestershire, Chris recreates that sense of wonder beautifully through synthetic textures that grow like the moss on the trees. It’s a gorgeous portrait of memory and serves as a love letter to his own past, establishing the nostalgic undertones of Oberon Effect and feeling like an open invitation for us to join him in running through the forest.

Across the ten tracks that make up the album, we also get the brilliant singles released by him over last year like “Assassin’s Picnic” with its psychedelic influences as well as a new rendition of his 2023 track “Reflect & Forget”. Chris mentions Kate Bush as an artist whose music has heavily shaped his own, and that can be felt thoroughly on Oberon Effect especially on the stunning vocal experiments on “Walking the Winds” and its piano-centered melodies.

It’s an album that never takes its themes lightly, fully committing to its own vision and creating a complex soundscape that spawns 70s and 80s inspirations thoughtfully. There’s some Low-era David Bowie in there, as well as Pink Floyd and Beatles-inspired melodies that weave in and out of each other seamlessly. Chris’s decision to navigate through organic instrumentations truly emphasizes the nostalgia present in every second of his new album and shows the artist at his most vulnerable.

The artist also prepared a trailer-style visual for the album as a way of urging people to save the date and keep an eye out for the full release – and it sure is damn worth it! Chris Mills under the C-Beem project has never sounded this intimate and open, both in sound experimentations as well as poetic lyricism. Surrounded by fairytale imagery and drenched in childhood innocence, Oberon Effect is a captivating album from start to finish. Filled with warmth and comforting harmonies, the record stands as a heartfelt and emotional deep dive into the self, retelling old stories as a way of remembering them and preserving their legacy.
