“Cross My Heart” captures a sense of whimsical wonder perfectly, with Michellar’s vocals intertwining in rich textures and cinematic soundscapes. Taking inspiration from acts like The Weeknd and crafting a sound not entirely unlike the one heard on M83’s seminal Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming or Gorillaz’s “On Melancholy Hill”, Michellar crafts a space for lucid dreams and self-reflection that feel alive and light-hearted.
The sugary track shows yet another side of Michellar as an artist, creating ambient melodies with upbeat dynamics and dreamy synths that never once feel disjointed. The song comes from a place of real human connection, as the singer herself comments on how the lyrics were written based on experiences that helped shape and test her own relationships. There is a delightful sense of wonder that permeates the track, largely resulting from the song’s title itself – “Cross My Heart” comes across as an innocent promise, childlike but dead serious at the same time.
Over new wave-infused atmospheres and heartfelt lyricism, Michellar’s “Cross My Heart” is a stunning song that delves into introspection with wide-eyed curiosity. It’s as uplifting as it is sweet, offering sincere musings that arrive at the same conclusion: love is what connects us and gets us through challenges and hard times. It’s a truly inspiring song that hits like hope itself, rooted in positive feelings of admiration and optimism that overflow as easily as breathing.
This song is an impressive addition to the artist’s ever-expanding discography and sound, highlighting her storytelling with the serenity and maturity that comes from first-hand experience. Her ability to translate all of this emotion with elegance and grace sets her apart from the rest, making her a remarkable songwriter who knows the power of her own words. The San Francisco-based singer shows no signs of stopping any time soon as she keeps on exploring the bounds of her own artistry and experimenting with new sounds, shapes and textures – and we’re all better for it.
