Ray Johnson’s most recent release, a full-length album titled “Strawberry Moon” created together with Dave Bieritz, takes us for a lonesome journey through chronicles of life shaped by passing persons and fleeting memories. Among them lies the greatest mystery, that of love, and while everything around you shapeshifts, the eyes seeing this world are still the same.

The album-length journey consists of 10 tracks, each telling an own story inspired by the experiences of a long life. Love comes through a number of them, but the journey also has space for many more themes both happier and sadder. From struggling to find the truth and the time wasted doing the wrong things, to holding hope for finding love, “Strawberry Moon” covers weighty topics and unravels them with gentle, weary poetry surrounded by a veil of acoustic folk.

One of the most beautiful songs on this release is undoubtedly “The Things I See” a warm slow-paced song about sitting together with a loved one. In the comfort of knowing everything is alright as long as the person is right beside you. Life is so much better when your soul has a home in someone’s heart.

“Jesters” offers a complete contrast and finds itself intertwined in the mess of trouble caused by dishonest people. Whether being a gambling addict in an actual casino setting, or having complicated relationships with some people in your family or friend circle, they both know all too well on how to hurt and damage, and leave you crawl after they take everything.
Love returns for the title track, “Strawberry Moon”. In this gentle tune, a sense of longing is a driving force as the glowing moon shines on two loving people too far apart. They both share a desire to meet each other finally, but for so long, letters of shared dreams flown in under the night sky will do it instead.
The album finishes on a tone of hope. “Don’t Say Maybe” a song of an experienced person looking out for love and hoping there’s someone, who shares the desire and doesn’t hesitate. The older bird still wants someone to sing with, and starry nights are best spent together.
The Illinois-based artist Ray Johnson combines themes of living as a human being full of emotions with a variety of genres twinged with a little hint of country. He excels at casting those fleeting emotions in crystal clear resin of his songwriting, and those deeply introspective thoughts, however personal, are also universal to all longing humans out there carving their path somewhere onwards in life.
