Cornelius Eady Trio have started May off with a new song “Quicksand”, a moody and emotional bluesy folk song witnessing the self-contradicting nature of humankind and the effects it brings within. In a world where things are increasingly becoming senseless, “Quicksand” finds what order lies in the chaos, and it’s sinking deeper in the wet bottomless pit.

Subtle melodies and muted atmosphere set the stage for the poetic core presented by Cornelius Eady’s wise and weighty vocals. Several lines of observant nature follow different sightings, from religious to political, taking place in a country stuck steadfast on a path to trouble. Sparse echoing synth notes in falling order stays consistent to what self-contradiction and being lost ends up doing within the lyrics.
In the stuffed quiet, laments of dead children and rampant violence don’t reach far, but hiding behind thoughts and prayers remains a common bandaid. Bassline deep enough to massage the inside of one’s head, plays a slow and persistent melody, also in line with the sinking, falling theme, as it provides a thematic background to a place of trouble, seen as a place to be.
The poem, standing at the heart of the song, was written by Cornelius Eady, a multifaceted artist with 8 books of poetry. When it comes to music, Eady has teamed up with guitarist and keyboardist Lisa Liu, and Charlie Rauh handling guitars, bass, and percussion. Together, the trio creates a captivating blend of folk, blues, funk, and poetry with emphasis on diversity and thought, and the COVID-19 lockdowns only heightened the trio’s creativity and unity. “Quicksand” is the first song from the upcoming release “The Misery Tree”, set for release on Memorial Day 2025, May 26th, save the date.
