American singer and songwriter Kelsie Kimberlin continues to impress with her refreshing perspective on the indie pop genre. The Washington-based musician’s latest effort is “Sucker” – a moody but still uplifting track about the moment you realise someone else is making a fool out of you in a relationship but you still can’t fully break out of it. On “Sucker” Kelsie delivers an impressive tune that feels drenched in mid-2010s indie pop with complex production and driven by strong melodies.
The artist herself says that the track wasn’t written only about her own experiences, but also “about so many girls I have known who have been taken advantage of by boys who simply strung them along”. It’s an emotional track that feels grounded in real hurt and painful situations while still emanating a hopeful feeling of getting out of them. “Sucker” is a necessary reflection on how we let others get away with bad things, and Kelsie does a great job in capturing that moment of realization.
She knows exactly what is going on and yet she sings ‘I’m alone now and I need you, I’m the fool here and I’ll be good. If you come back, I’ll be waiting‘ with devastating matter-of-fact. It’s a tough track that hails from many different and conflicting emotions, perfectly curated to be the catalyst of change to anyone who might need it.

Such confusing feelings are explored further in the self-directed music video for the track, her fourth video filmed in Kyiv, Ukraine, while she’s working on a film about Ukranian resistance. “Sucker” shows Kelsie alone in her room performing the song on multiple different instruments, meant to stand as a metaphor for trying out several ways of leaving the toxicity of the relationship she’s singing about. It’s a simple but incredibly effective concept, illustrated by how each instrument helps to pick her mood back up but only for a short time.
“Sucker” is a challenging track that candidly portrays the loneliness and despair that come from being in the wrong relationship. Written from a bold perspective of self-blaming, it’s a song made to aid others going through it by zooming out and offering a bleak perspective on how destructive that behaviour is. Kelsie nails those struggles with heartfelt empathy and compassion, making “Sucker” probably her most vulnerable and intriguing track to date.
