Backed by a production heavily influenced by Sufjan Stevens, Tom creates a track that feels rooted in deep emotions and philosophical musings. “I Could Have Run” is a testament on Tom’s remarkable songwriting abilities that turn current events into moving and personal art. It’s an intimate and delicate track with ever-growing textures and melodies, perfectly performed by the musician with raw heartfelt energy.
“I Could Have Run” was beautifully produced by Paris-based musician Saving Felix, offering an ambitious and yet comforting ground for the song to be built upon. Tom’s sincere lyricism really shines through on his new single and perfectly portray the sentiments of regret by making them clash against hopeful and shimmering instrumentals. The song creates an inviting atmosphere that hides its dark and deathly undertones with sunlit strings and backing harmonies from folk/synthpop musician Shakkalo.

Tom Hancock is proving himself to be a master of human emotion and subtlety, managing to add so much in just a simple chord. “I Could Have Run” is a magnificent reflection on the moments that precede death, a song that pleads with itself on what could have gone differently while also being painfully aware that nothing could be done. It holds a palpable weight in its themes and does a remarkable job of letting such heaviness levitate through the melodies. The result is a song about death that feels light and breathy, making “I Could Have Run” a fascinating track coming from one of the most promising names in indie folk.
