Seattle-based quartet Haus of Sound is at it again with yet another expansion of their soundscape, coming in the form of new single “Mirage”. Following suit after the band’s dabbles in ska (“Anxiety“) and the electronic-infused pop punk of “Pain in My Eyes“, the american band find themselves fully diving into yet another unmistakable territory: nu-metal. But Haus of Sound’s rendition of nu-metal isn’t what you’d normally expect, naturally.

Inspired by classic Evanescence structures and the dichotomy of rapping and singing that hails from Linkin Park, “Mirage” is an impressive next step for them in exciting new directions. Their new single a song that captures nu-metal’s exhilarating excesses with subtle indie rock sensibility and guitars that aren’t even overpowering heavy, making it a noteworthy change in the genre.
Led by call-and-response dynamics in their songwriting and delivery “Mirage” keeps the band’s momentum going with remarkable precision. The band does a great job in accumulating their references into one cohesive sound, and their new single offers everything you could ask for: big synths, quick-fire guitar riffs and sharp melodies that slither their way towards the biggest change in pace, it’s atmosphere.

As Haus of Sound continues to tease their highly anticipated debut album Campfire Stories, they succeed in showing off all of their disjointed influences and inspirations in the most engaging ways. In a thrilling new single backed by true emotions and a yearning for connection, to themselves and the world at large in equal measure. The band managed to sound bigger than ever while retaining their signature raw punk energy, especially enhanced by the interplay between Dex Morgenstern’s on-point flow and lead singer Gabrielle Burton’s melodic cries as she channels everyone from Alanis Morissette to Gwen Stefani to Hayley Williams.
“Mirage” builds itself on layers upon layers of instruments heightened to their absolute best. Synth waves taken from The Cure’s most haunting tracks are carried side by side the traditional rock stylings make its rich textures the perfect backdrop for their most intriguing and interesting vocals to date.
The song tackles issues such as disillusionment and identity as it explodes into the drama of inner conflicts through a self-reflective lens. “Mirage” is a breathtaking track that embodies everything the band has been building up to in one cathartic experience, unlike anything they’ve done so far, turning heads and raising eyebrows and leaving us wanting to know what else they’ve got up their sleeves – something great, surely.
