The enigmatic singer-songwriter from London returns with a new song in tow, this time on the theme of love long gone. Frank Joshua’s newest song “Melanie Klein” tackles the topic of heartbreak, divorce and separation through the lens of psychoanalysis and haunting lyricism witnessing lots of tears, fears and labeling and, in the end, separated lives.

In the sorrowful echoing atmosphere, reminiscent voice speaks up looking back at the relationship, which once was working seemingly just fine. Melancholic piano chords and foggy backdrop stand witness to cracks appearing in the relationship and two people once a team now turning against each other.

A life had been built on the love between two people, a family with children and a well-kept home to live in. But although pretty and close-knit from the outside, disagreements and the wife feeling she’s never enough and her input is taken for granted rot the foundation of this life from the inside. Arguments, demanding love despite there being nothing left to give and two trapped souls in an unhappy home finally end up in separation, a thing they never though would happen in the happy days of their relationship.
Frank Joshua noted that everyone has a story about lost love, and “Melanie Klein” contains a few of those from people he knows. Whoever the characters in the stories are, the complexities of feelings, inability to communicate, and hurt egos pointing fingers at each other are universal features. The end of love gets turned into a painful time, as the life that’s been built since they got together, collapses into dust.
The story of heartbreak is also featured in the single’s music video, a short movie looking at the life of a family of three. Through foggy grayscale imagery, the fights, tears and unhappiness lead to the final scene with an open door and the man standing by it as she walks away.
The song was born in collaboration with producer Tony White and pianist Anthony England, and Frank Joshua will be returning in 8 weeks time with another new piece to make you think and feel.
