Occurrence’s New Inspiring Album “Real Person” is for friends and lovers of experimental music

OCCURRENCE REAL PERSON ARTICLE COVER

Occurrence’s newest full-length is finished and ready. Titled “Real Person”, the record takes off into experimental realms, where emotions and associations are described through rhythmic and melodic variations. Created as a nod to people close to Occurrence’s members, the LP stands as a highlight uniting the band’s experimental past and inspiring friends.

On the album, 8 songs are lined up with each representing an individual that has inspired the band in one way or another. Each song is a musical representations of the person whose name is in its title, diving into explorative soundscapes describing everything said person has brought into the lives of the band members.

First demos were already created during the making of “Real Friend”, but “Real Person” is not exactly a follow-up, but rather a different path altogether. A strong emphasis is on experimenting with sounds and rhythms, combining them in all sorts of ways to form rather intimate and impactful atmospheres. The works are all instrumental, occasionally using vocal samples and found sound to add deeper meaning to the dense yet fairly warm realms.

Listening to the record is an experience, sometimes fairly eery and other times calm and peaceful, almost to the level of divine. Each song makes the person’s impact perceivable even for those, who have no clue about any of the people involved. Some are flooding with energy, like the running synthline and intense bass of “Louise Penny”, which sits on almost the opposite side from “Catherine Vervaet Hollyer”, a slow-paced, majestic and spacious track with an endless atmosphere.

“Wayne Feldman” has some of the most experimental beats, where unconventional time signatures meet various percussive sounds, and it features the recording of Wayne playing a banjo, now turned into a techno beat. “John Charles Hager” holds an echoing atmosphere with fast-moving synth arps, and the recording of actor Ryan Spahn reading out a letter defining “what love is”.

Occurrence has returned to its experimental roots, and the New York-based trio has broken out of what is considered a traditionally structured song to fully construct a sonic representation of the people they truly care about. From love to creative influences, “Real Person” is an album that shows the importance of close people, not only for the band, but also for anyone’s growth, creative or otherwise.
