The first day of August is going to bring along a new single by Prince of Sweden. The song, titled “Points of View”, sways slowly to a melancholic indie rock beat as it tells a story of a person, now sitting alone in a room sinking their sorrows into the bucket of ice cream. On nearby cupboard stands a picture of them with their partner, and said partner had just left with no warning.
A room full of sorrow holds one point of view, and it’s that of the abandoned partner. While the melancholic sound weaves its way through, the person’s sticky feelings of despair are revealed through lyrics of simple honesty that also shows the angry ugly side of their despair. This sudden departure has uprooted their self-esteem, and right now they feel sore and tender like a victim of an angry porcupine.
While the lyrics show the inner turmoil of the person currently sinking their spoon deeper into the ice cream tub, the bassline represents the slow yet steady passage of time, the relentless course of life, even if it seems to have stopped for this person in the sudden absence of their partner. “Points of View” represents what it’s like being stuck in a state of sadness, angry at neighbors being seemingly even louder than before, and looking for a remedy for the pain from the bottom of the ice cream tub, while also showing how strong emotions can take over one’s entire life.
The single precedes the release of the Prince of Sweden’s second full-length album, scheduled for release sometime in September. It’s a concept album about a woman who ran off to Paris, and a man who does his best to find her, and it was recorded in Zigzag Studio in London. That studio was full of a variety of old synths as well as a rather large collection of various percussive instruments, which were given place on the record.
Despite what the artist name might suggest, Prince of Sweden is not based in Sweden, instead the singer-songwriter lives in the UK. As a young lad living in countryside, he learned to play guitar from a farmer living near him, and once London became the new home, the budging artist started to release music and play live as much as possible.
Influences from the likes of Nick Cave and Baxter Dury meet Prince of Sweden’s lyricism joining the heartfelt and the humorous. This, and a lot more influences and natural inkling for trying out new instruments makes Prince of Sweden a solid and colorful artist with lots to offer for anyone that enter his musical universe.
