Following a very strong and promising debut with “Drunk Texting“, singer and songwriter Exzenya continued to challenge and defy the boundaries of alternative pop with stellar singles “Scansion” and “Regulator of My Dopamine“. Now the global citizen but Los Angeles-based artist is back with her most experimental and haunting track yet, “Intermittent Love”.
On her latest track the singer goes the trip-hop route with an eerie atmospheric song that once again explores deeper phychological and behavioral themes on its poignant lyricism. Exzenya already proved herself as able to dive fully into her accumulated knowledge in psychology and communication, translating it into music with unlike anyone else could. “Intermittent Love” plays with concepts of reinforcement and punishment, exploring the repercussions of manipulation and its effects on people.
“Intermittent Love” stands as an uncomfortable track in the best possible way, giving proper weight and unparalleled density to its subject through both scientific as well as a profoundly human point of view. Over menacing and foreboding production that is centered around dissonant synths and experimental cacophony, Exzenya touches on the volatility of inconsistent affection, creating a raw and extremely vulnerable landscape of confusion and despair as she experiences love that is dangled in front of her only to be pulled away in key moments.
However, the artist does a fantastic job in not letting that also take away all of her hopes completely. This results in a track that feels like it’s suspended in an eternal state of hopefulness that is grander than the immediate pain she’s suffering all throughout. That hope is what drives “Intermittent Love” forward every step of the way, shining just a little brighter than the shadow cast by the emotional manipulation and it’s constant push and pull dynamics.
Guided by wavering and broken melodies thoroughly enhanced by her distinctive vocal delivery, “Intermittent Love” is a song about tension. Its production borrows from R&B with rich and often conflicting textures, making the track sound offbeat and unpredictable. The stakes are high, and the content is deeply personal while still speaking of universal truths about humanity in a way that captures the thrill and dread of chasing uncertain connections with a certain softness that is exhilarating.
