Miss Ricky is a singer and songwriter from Canada who’s been gathering some real traction with her EPs and singles since 2019. The Milton-based artist just released “Deeper”, taken from her upcoming sophomore record Sounds at Night. Miss Ricky’s music is a darkpop-tinged R&B filled with vulnerability and strength, backed by intricate textures and soft vocal melodies.
On “Deeper” the musician brings all of that to the centrefold as she glides through beautiful soundscapes that make an excellent use of the space that surrounds her voice. The drum machines and synth lines flood the ambient with raw intimacy, creating an atmospheric track that is centered on esoteric emotions and wanting to share them. The lyricism on her new single tackles issues of self-confidence and affection as she details the feelings of falling in love with someone and showing your flaws in order to be accepted. It’s a gentle track that feels like a dark lullaby and yet lets her take the lead action.
Miss Ricky makes the conscious decision of letting her vulnerabilities be known, as she sorrowfully sings “Can you feel me getting closer? Does it scare you like it scares me?” on the chorus before finishing things up with “Take my hand, let’s go deeper“. Her latest single shows an artist willing to face her own insecurities head on in order to establish a more meaningful connection with another person. It’s a hard decision to make and an impossibly terrifying one, but she does it through soft self-assurance and inviting atmospheres.
The cinematic song stands as an absolute highlight amongst her powerful discography, making us extremely excited to hear more from the upcoming album. “I wrote this as a sort of diary format as the song is deeply intimate”, the artist herself comments on the track. It’s a scary feeling just as much as it is a beautiful one, and she knows that taking this path is the only way to fully connect with someone.
But she also expertly knows that it’s not all up to her alone, and the responsibility must be shared. “(…) it takes two to make it work. Both parties need to be willing to dive into each other, and this song acts as an invitation to that, knowing that it’s unnatural for both parties”, she concludes.
“Deeper” is the moment you lay your cards on the table and let the other person know that you’re all in. Now you must wait for their move in the hopes that they meet you halfway, and that is exactly what is scary. “Deeper” is a celebration of vulnerability and shows yearning for something, well, deeper. It’s a universal feeling when in a newfound romantic relationship, and the new song from Miss Ricky captures that moment at its purest: flawed, terrifying, vulnerable, but also hopeful that you’re not alone in it.
