Vølve, Danish artist deeply influenced by wise women of Nordic mythology, has just revealed a new single “Vølven Sang / Jeg Ser”. It’s a new chapter in the artist’s ongoing voyage in the mythical, ethereal landscapes, where deep wisdom meets untamed forces and creatures of untold powers.
Deep within layers upon layers of meaning, wisdom and Nordic myths, a sacred truth is held and caressed by ritualistic drum beat and instruments ranging from cello and piano to synths and samples, forming a dark and powerful ritualistic sound. Eery, bold and powerful, the song demands the listener to listen up and pay good attention.
Though one may think this is the sound of an alternate universe where spirits from Nordic myths rule the realm, the song will be quick to correct you. Created in reference to the myth of Ragnarök, the song carries an important message about what happens when people forget. Through dark imagery and hints of a variety of mythological tales, the truth is revealed that one is doomed to repeat history when they forget what happened in the past, and why it happened. And thus, in the current extremely volatile climate, this is a fair warning.
The single comes along with a rhythmic repetitive b-side “Varðlokkur”. Inspired by old sagas, it’s a chanting song in Old Norse used to summon spirits in times of need.
Vølve aka Helene Navne is a Copenhagen-based artist and performer, who turns ancient, sacred, and eery mythical tales into music that connects the past with the present, and big themes with personal findings. This deep, dangerous mythological energy is present in Vølve’s live performances too, as they often resemble rituals. Recently, during Wild Women Festival, Vølve performed outdoors during rain, and women in white were doing a protective dance around the equipment as part of the ritual.
