Initially established as a solo project back in 2019 by Serbian musician Milutin Krašević, Bones in Butter slowly expanded into a full band and has released several albums and singles over the years. “Persona Non Grata”, taken from their excellent Cosmopolis record from May 2024, is a shining example of how well their post-punk sound has cemented itself in a fully realized artistic vision focused on creativity and melody.

Pulling inspirations from acts like Lou Reed and Bauhaus, “Persona Non Grata” draws from real people, experiences and events that took place in his native Belgrade. There are so many interesting and different influences on this production that range from the ethereal dreaminess of the chorus to the almost reggae bounce of the verses. It’s a fascinating track that really highlights how much Bones in Butter has grown and matured over the past six years since their debut Love or Fear.

“Persona Non Grata” is the kind of song that manages to set a clear reference for itself, in this case the post-punk atmosphere, and also escapes from its limitations. That kind of intriguing songwriting is what makes Bones in Butter’s songs feel so special and completely unique, creating an inviting and compelling song that unravels into incredible territories. The many production ideas are equally matched by how emotional and vivid the social and political critique of the lyrics stand up.
Bones in Butter continues to amaze and surprise us with their innovative and unparalleled soundscape. They effortlessly bring an energy of freedom and excitement to the alternative rock and post-punk scenes, not unlike something heard on albums by The War on Drugs or The National, while still being faithful to their own personal aesthetic.
“Persona Non Grata” stands out as one of their finest and most interesting compositions, a track that bends and shifts its own direction just enough to be compelling and never loses sight of its goal. It’s been well over a year since Bones in Butter’s latest record, which makes us excited and anxious to hear what will be coming next, as this is a band that gets better with every new release, and we’re all ready for it.
