Based in Italy, electronic metal project Leather Laces is back with “Mind Control Techniques”, the fourth and final installment before the release of their first full-lenght record due to early 2026. As usual their new track expands upon the lore that shrouds the music itself into something bigger and deeper, letting us in new parts of the story and how it unravels.
The exciting new band coming from the artist behind _SHOE made a splash with the impactful debut single “Rocket Launcher“, and now they cement every single one of their influences with cohesion and laser-focused determination. “Mind Control Techniques” showcases the band swiftly approaching an unprecedented balance between industrial metal, synthpop, and spoken word vocals, creating an entirely new universe of their own. The expansion of its own narrative is done seamlessly as Leather Laces tackles the themes of control and manipulation, overblown by their dystopic setting but still hitting close enough to home to make it feel real and alarming.
Mind Control Techniques represents a giant step towards music as its own all-encompassing tool of storytelling; everything about the track feels extremely vivid, translating its melodies via filmmaking techniques and a plot-driven story. Pulling references from the real world, like the CIA’s MK Ultra project, gives the single an extra edge that purposefully blurs the lines between dystopic fiction and documenting a disturbing reality.
The music itself also beams with creativity, constantly jumping between urgent drum machines and lively guitar riffs that feel strangely eerie. The oscillation between arpeggiated synth lines and heavy metal inspired distortion makes “Mind Control Techniques” a completely unique and singular experience, even amongst the _SHOE-universe. It’s their most immersive and innovative track to date, perfectly tying in both the darkwave references from _SHOE as well as the industrial leanings of Leather Laces’s previous singles.
On the new single the Italian artist raises their own bar and delivers a thrilling experience that feels just experimental enough to give it an extra something, but also hauntingly familiar. From the intro and its similarities to Grimes’s seminal “Oblivion” to the overwhelming cacophony of crashing cymbals, sharp guitars, and menacing atmosphere that could make Trent Reznor proud, “Mind Control Techniques” offers a wild journey into new territory populated by intriguing ideas and aims to know how far things can be pushed.
