Hong Kong based duo Carpe Diem have been making their name with ethereal vocals surrounded by fairytale instrumentation, gathering listeners by blowing magic into life experiences. Now, the duo is ready to reveal their first full-length release “Dream Odyssey”, offering a lengthy journey into a charming, magical world narrated by Ada’s beautiful voice.
“Dream Odyssey”, named after two songs on the release, is an 11-track pinnacle following years of steady and dedicated work. It combines all the previously released singles under one roof, forming a cohesive and magnetic journey into a world where creatures of magic coexist with humans, and life is not taken for granted.
It all started back when the six-member band DateBack disbanded, leaving band members Keith and Ada to almost say farewell to each other as well. The two had some music that was too good to let it go to waste, though, which meant that goodbyes never came. Instead, the duo decided to start working together under a new name, becoming Carpe Diem in the process.
These songs started trickling out slowly over the years as singles, whenever they found time to work on music besides juggling dayjobs and family. Ada’s voice became the central piece in all of them, spreading messages of magic with serene pure vocals. Multi-instrumentalist Keith weaves ethereal instrumental realms to support the story told by poetic lyrics, choosing instruments that complement Ada’s voice the best.
In addition to instruments like flutes, didgeridoo and handpans, the duo includes sampled sounds to add more captivating energy to their songs’ atmospheres. For instance, “Nature Odyssey” following a lost sprite in a storm-riddled rainforest incorporates rain and thunder, and “Pixie Dust” has crickets and birds singing through the melodies of handpan.
Carpe Diem’s music crosses many borders, combining the energizing sound of rock with folk influences, offering impact through seeming simplicity. Ada’s lyricism has the ability to breathe new perspective to life, while Keith has mastered creating highly immersive soundscapes, layered and rich with detail yet spacious and subtle.
